Tout droit sorti de nos films de science fiction, ils sont parmis nous depuis 1983.
Aux origines il y avait le Boris Handroid (1980) et le Novag Chess Robot Adversary (1982), mais des robots trés trés couteux avec des bras robotisés.
Le jeu de Milton Bradley ( MB ) peut enfin toucher de par son prix le grand public et est sorti en 1983 sous plusieurs noms : Grandmaster et Milton 6100 selon les pays. Puis vient le Fidelity Phantom en 1988, Fidelity Phantom Chesster en 1991 ( et sa version spéciale Eyeball ) et enfin le Mephisto Phantom ( 1991 ).
Mais revenons aux origines, le Milton est la révolution de 1983, un robot qui bouge ses pièces seuls, avec un système magnétique situé sous l'échiquier.
Le logiciel a été développé par David Levy et Mark Taylor de la société "intelligent games". David Levy nous fait d'ailleurs terriblement penser au professeur Falken du film wargames.

Il y a maintenant un petit dernier avec un design plus moderne mais à mon sens beaucoup moins réussi et moins classe que son grand frére, c'est le Phantom Force d'Excalibur (2007). ( qui succède à l'Excalibur Mirage du même type datant de 1997 )
